MOST of us have a Madonna moment at some point. A moment where, all of a sudden, you have a drastic urge to reinvent yourself.
Deep set, boho waves that looked natural as oppose to that curling tong perfection of the 90s.
My moment came the other week when having fought the final losing battle with my long, thick, straight brown hair, I announced to the Confidential office that it was time for a chop. A big chop.
Body Confidential editor, Lynda Moyo, immediately swivelled round in her chair.
“But your hair is so amazingly thick and long” she said. “Why on earth would you want to cut it into a bob?”
My first response was that at 27, I felt too old for such long hair and that my tresses were due a more mature and sleek look. That wasn’t the real reason though. In truth, my hair, although long and glossy to most, had felt like a heavy mop for quite some time. No shape, no structure – it just hung there like heavy curtains.
Lynda continued on her pro-long hair offensive and urged me to try styling it before making the drastic decision to lop it all off. And this is how I discovered the Enrapture Amplify Jumbo Waver.
It wasn’t so much the sight of the industrial-sized hair implement but the accompanying tagline that caught my attention: 'For when everyday hair just isn't enough.' It was me, to a tee.
Armed with the device, I headed home to try and revive my lacklustre hair. At first sight, the Jumbo Waver did make me feel slightly nervous as it's pretty bulky and heavy. It took a bit of getting used to as I wasn't sure how long it would take for my hair to curl and had to experiment with the amount of hair I should use.
However, once I got the hang of it I was wowed by the results. Deep set, boho waves that looked natural as oppose to that curling tong perfection of the 90s.
It took close to an hour to get through it all but I do have a thick mane (hairdressers always complain when they are blow drying it). I'm confident next time it won't take me long at all. Practice makes perfect and all that.
Although happy with the results I did come away with a slightly charred ear as the outside doesn't have any heat protection. Your ear and head is exposed to the high temperatures, so you need to be careful with it. I learnt this lesson pretty quickly and kept the Jumbo Waver away from my head as much as possible. Problem solved.
I was also initially concerned that due to the weight of my hair, the curls would drop out within an hour but they held their own for the entire day.
It was a welcome change from straighteners and what’s more, it made me realise my hair’s capabilities. I’m not ruling out a big chop completely, but this device has really helped me to reinvent the hair I have, until my next Madonna moment of course.
Enrapture Amplify Jumbo Waver is available at a number of retailers and online stores priced at £74.99. For the full list please click here.
