Fake Tan Test: Fake Bake Unisex Bronzing Gel

Jordan McDowell gets sticky in places one should never get sticky...

Fake Tan Test: Fake Bake Unisex Bronzing Gel

Tanning product: Fake Bake Unisex Bronzing Gel

Price: £24.50 p/148ml + free latex gloves. Available and the new Selfridges Manchester Exchange Square Beauty Destination.

Consistency:

Think Golden Syrup. Sticky, slimy and shimmery - that’s the Fake Bake way. A bronze coloured gel that turns near invisible upon contact, making application a stretch to say the least. The ‘instant, natural bronzed tan’ isn’t so instant and doesn’t show signs of ever being present until after a four hour wait. Forget this tan for instant bronzing fixes and keep it for gradual tan regimes only.

Hair factor:

A sticky gel but one that is oddly gentle on body hair. The gel is slippery enough to glide over areas of forestry with ease, to produce a near even tan. Expect hair follicles to be somewhat the concentration of this tan’s efforts and avoid vigorous ribbing or else flaky tango skin will ensue.

Streak factor:

All in all this gel reacts well. However, as the gel is near transparent during application, it is difficult to know where one has already applied and where one has yet to. Make sure you’re applying with the help of another to avoid mishaps. Another positive for this brand is the latex gloves. Get ready to play Doctors and Nurses because, unlike a mitt, these gloves allow you to get into all sorts of long-lost nooks and crannies to ensure an absolutely (and I mean an absolutely) all over tan.

 Aroma:

Fake Bake boasts a ‘unique scent’ to all who read the packaging. Unique is one word to describe it. So unique that no other tan brand would want it. The fumes evoke visions of budget Vodka, swigged in parks the country wide by chavs in tracksuits. Hold your nose during application but fret not, the smell will leave you once the syrup has soaked in.

Longevity:

Since the tan takes a while to appear one hopes it takes a while to disappear. Expect 3-4 days without having to reapply.

Tan out of ten?

Fake Bake does exactly what it says on the bottle. Fakes it. Don’t expect an ‘instant, natural bronzed tan’ and beware that the ‘light, fast drying and non-sticky gel’ is a thick, slow drying, very sticky gel.
