JUST when we thought TV sets were the only things that could be HD ready, a new fake tanning system suggests otherwise.
Puri-Tan boasts HD, 3D and 4D tanning techniques first used in Hollywood – the capital of the California tan of course. The technical talk refers to the procedure whereby the tan is fine sprayed onto the body using two shades from a choice of seven.
The first shade is the base colour and the second shade is slightly darker, allowing parts of the body to be shaded, highlighted and contoured. This can give a slimmer – up to 10 virtual lbs lost apparently - or more muscularly defined appearance, depending on the look you want to go for.
The tanning product was developed by Manchester-based beauty therapist Kate Camilleri in 2008. Disappointed with other brands’ lack of range, development, longevity and harsh irritant ingredients, Kate, with the help of a chemist, created Puri-Tan.
Unlike many other tanning brands on the market, Puri-Tan contains no parabens or alcohol – harsh chemicals widely used in the cosmetics industry and found in products most of us probably use on a daily basis.
Kate has clearly worked hard at making her tanning products as natural as possible, however Puri-Tan does still contain DHA – the non-toxic chemical in fake tans which causes the skin to turn brown. Unfortunately some people find DHA also makes their skin irritated, but Kate has tried to minimise this by adding aloe vera to her concoction.
Keen to see the results of this advanced tanning, which has reportedly recently grabbed the attention of celebrity tan fan Katie Price, Confidential invited Kate and her Puri-Tan tent into the office to demonstrate the technique on tantastic Tamar and daring Darren.
Appearing with a fairly light load, it was surprising to see within minutes, a two-metre tent erected in the boardroom and Kate looking like the Lara Croft of the tanning world, armed with an airbrush gun.
Tamar before
First in was Tamar. No stranger to home tanning disasters, her skin had just recovered from a bad patch – literally. She’d used fake tan at home and came out looking like she’d had a fight with Ron. Seal.
Sick of the rigmarole of self-tan application, Tamar admitted: “It takes nights out of my week, smells and makes my bedding horrible.”
She stripped down to her smalls to try Puri-Tan on the promise of an all-over natural-looking tan that doesn’t smell or ruin her life.
Kate began by spraying the pre-tan priming spray all over Tamar to neutralise her skin to the ideal PH level in preparation. A mitt can then be used to exfoliate if necessary.
Puri-Tan flawless finish cream is then applied to drier areas such as the knees and elbows to weaken the DHA’s effect on these parts and create a natural faded look rather than elbows that look like they’ve been resting in terracotta clay all day.
Tamar wasn’t in need of clever weight loss contouring, but after the initial base colour tan, Kate did show her how to define cheek bones and waist using the shading technique. It was very effective. This technique, combined with today’s Photoshop trickery is clearly the reason why celebrities can be made to look 20 years younger in an instant. It’s a huge con, but one which can come in handy if you’ve got a special event to go to or a holiday that you’ve failed to diet for in time. Within ten minutes, Tamar looked lightly tanned, subtly glowing and was able to put her clothes back on without that sticky feeling.
Next in the tanning tent was Darren, reluctantly. The worry of the tan clogging in his beard almost prevented him from trying it out, but Kate reassured him the lightweight nature of the tan would mean it wouldn’t cling to any specific areas, even without any prior exfoliation.
Once in the booth, Darren soon lost his fear of the fake stuff – even going so far as to request specific muscle group definition in the contouring phase. ‘The Ronaldo’ muscle, on his upper back, was a favourite, along with extra abdominal definition.A few days later and Darren concluded that his overall experience had been better than any other fake tan he’d experimented with in the past, not that he’s into that type of thing of course.
The result was a blended golden tan rather than an obvious orange hew. He also found the tan lasted over a week and even then, only became a bit dry around the expected areas such as the elbows and knees. He also admitted he hadn’t bothered to moisturise that week, so overall the result had been astonishingly good.Tamar had also been initially pleased with the non-sticky, non-smelly result which when washed off the day after the application, looked natural and healthy. However being a tan addict, she was disappointed the tan didn’t stay as bold as she’d have liked for the full week. She also found that despite obsessively moisturising, it actually became patchy in certain areas three days after application. Kate explained how unfortunately mineral oil found in certain moisturisers can cause the tan to fade faster and this could have been the reason for Tamar’s short-lived look.
Fake tanning is clearly a very individual process and just like our natural skin tones, no two shades are ever going to be exactly the same. Your skin type also plays a big part in the fake tan’s overall longevity, but in the shady world of fake tanning Puri-Tan is certainly one of the better options with its streak-free, smell free, Ronaldo-enhancing benefits.
Puri-Tan airbrush spray tanning costs between £28 - £45 depending on your preferences and is available at the following beauty salons:

Yeah typical man flexing away in the tanning booth. Not sure about this 3D 4D malarkey, can't imagine a bit of spray would make me look thinner, am just having visions of my tummy coming at innocent onlookers in 3D ARGH... what is that!!!!! lol
Is that Gordo in that tanning booth?
