Woolly jumpers are a Christmas staple the world over and chances are that this year you’ll un-wrap a bundle of knitted love from a relative or friend and ponder how to pull off the pull-over without losing face. Alas there is no need to fret; the winter woolly can be a wardrobe wonder during the cold spell.

Jumpers come in all styles, but the ones that are en vogue this season are those fussy Scandinavian knits currently being donned by French Connection and Zara mannequins.
Pair with light colour chinos or dark tight jeans to offset the age-specific theme of the jumper and layer it up with a gillet to add a sport-luxe feel. This theme was prominent at this year’s A/W show by Harvey Nichols Manchester, pictured.
Should you be the recipient of a jumper less on a par with the Nichols elite and more akin to those worn by fishermen, a different, yet still stylish, look can be adapted. Chunky roll neck knits lend themselves well to the fashion craze that has swept the urban scene throughout the UK this year. The original Barbour jacket has become a status symbol, sported by everyone from her Majesty to Lilly Allen and looks its best when draped over a cream chunky knit jumper and drain pipe jeans.
The look is also perfectly adapted to summer yachting trips by subtracting the jacket for a life vest and the brogues for deck-shoes, should a spot of sailing whet your appetite.

Pop Boutique offer those fashionable fussy fleeces from £20 and Best Vintage host some jumpers straight out of Saved By The Bell. For a look altogether more country, Henri Lloyd is your one stop Mancunian spot for everything chunky.
‘What happens when I get a novelty jumper from Father Christmas’, I hear you cry. Try to look ironic and if this fails cross the gift giver off your 2011 Christmas card list.
