The Confidential Challenge: for him (part 9)

The ‘S’ word
A simple Google search of "buy steroids" yields 852,000 results. Why? Well I confess to knowing little about steroids except what I have read in the papers and the numerous stories, good and bad, online about taking these drugs.

I have always been curious about steroids in the past because I saw it as a quick win to get a great body in a short period of time. But apart from being hugely dangerous and expensive, I have met and spoke to various people who have taken them and they’ve all said the same thing. The results are great but the side effects are really not worth it.

Have I considered taking them? Yes I have actually, but bear with me on this before judging. If I had been taking steroids I would have achieved my goals in 6-8 weeks rather slogging away for 12 weeks and still needing to lose 6-7 per cent body fat and achieving a models body. It’s one thing cheating at cards or an online game, but cheating my achievements and taking illegal drugs (I say illegal loosely as you can buy it all over the internet) is taking this challenge to another level.

I’m like most men who go the gym. We look at those with perfect muscles and wish we could be like that. Case in point was a guy I met in the gym six weeks ago. He was embarking on a similar challenge to me. Overweight, moobs and beer belly, six weeks on and he has the body I want. Gulp. It made me feel really bad. I was highly curious as I had not seen him in the gym as much as me and yet his results far outweighed mine. I thought steroids but of course didn’t want to assume so I asked how he achieved such great results in such a short period.

Him: “I’m not going to lie pal, I have worked my ass off but I have been on the gear, hence why the fast results.”

The man looked sad and disappointed which puzzled me when he looked amazing.

Me: “You don’t seem too happy about it even though you look great in such a short period?”

Man: “It comes with its down falls, a bit like selling your soul to devil.”

Me: “But you look amazing, it surely can’t come with that many downfalls and side effects?”

I’m not going to name them all but he was experiencing insomnia and had really bad acne on his back which he said was very sore.

Having a steroid programme is a science in itself and from what I’ve read is even more of mine field than the supplements I spoke about in last week’s column.

The results are great but the side effects are really not worth it.

In short, I’m happy with my results so far, although not model perfect. Hopefully with everything I have learnt in this challenge, I will get there eventually. After all this challenge was a lifestyle change more than anything.

4 weeks to go
I’m really going to miss the discipline of this challenge when it’s finished. My life has never been so organised plus I have never been so focused at work. I think Gordo is looking forward to having me as a drinking partner again but even he admits he has loved focused Mr Grimes.

It will be sad not to have Darren ringing or texting me every day as he has been a great mentor and brought my lifestyle change to life.

I don’t like the statistic that 87 per cent of people who lose weight put it back on within six months (plus a few more pounds). I’m already worried about the photo shoot at the end of this challenge too.Read next week to see what I’m doing to make sure I’m not one of the 87 per cent....

Remember I doing this for a great charity called Forever Manchester.
