If you want a fun and social way to get fit and stay in shape, British Military Fitness could be what you're looking for.
Otherwise known as BMF, these fitness sessions not only get you in shape but also wake up your mind, get you out in the fresh air, and put you into a setting where you will inevitably meet new people.
BMF is all about the professionalism of its armed forces instructors. They are experts at motivating people and getting the best out of them, and they also have a great sense of humour. Broadly speaking, their military fitness classes are one hour long and consist of paired exercises, circuits, some running and team games. However, no two classes or instructors are the same and this ensures members get plenty of variety during their time with us.
BMF is no ‘boot camp’ either. Their instructors foster an atmosphere of encouragement so that people within the group achieve their best. The classes offer a refreshing change from exercising alone or in an indoor gym environment. Best of all, the first class is free.
How do you sign up?
Just go to www.britmilfit.com, complete the online health questionnaire and then turn up at the park. In Manchester they run classes in Sale Water Park, Platt Fields, Heaton Park, Bruntwood Park and Moss Bank Park, so there’s plenty to choose from.
What happens once you’re there?
You’ll be divided into your fitness ability group and then guided by an instructor through a ten minute warm-up session. After that you will be with the other members in your coloured bibs for the rest of the class. BMF is a total body workout and the exercises are designed to work all your major muscle groups.
What happens if you can’t handle the pace?
You will. The instructors are not there to break you – they are there to provide motivation and encouragement ensuring you work out at your optimum level.
Will you want to come back?
Seven out of ten people who trial a class sign up. And if it’s not for you, it’s no big deal as the first session is completely free.
Beginner groups: blue bibs
For people returning to fitness or for those who do little or no exercise. Most members start in this group. The beginner classes are always fun and concentrate on getting people involved. If you are looking to lose weight and get fitter then this will certainly help you achieve your aims.
Intermediate group: red bibs
For people who have either worked their way up from the beginner group or for those joining BMF with a reasonable standard of fitness already. During these classes the instructors are looking to build on your aerobic fitness levels and the classes are run at a slightly increased tempo.
Advanced group: green bibs
For the fittest members who are looking to push back the boundaries of their exercise regime and already have a robust level of fitness. Remember that despite being in the highest group, you’re setting yourself up to be pushed by an optimistic instructor.
