The Brazilian blow dry

Helen Ramsbottom reveals the best ever Brazilian secret

The Brazilian blow dry

Bed head is something I seriously suffer from. I’m not talking slight matting at the back either - it is full-on dragged through a hedge backward, struck by a bolt of lightning en route for good measure. Quite remarkable.

This is honestly the best thing I’ve ever had done on my hair in terms of easy styling. Fully recommend it. I can now look forward to globetrotting gallivanting without a hair care in the world.

On holiday if I get out of the pool it’s mere minutes before it takes on a frizzy life of its own. And don’t mention festivals. After spending a night in a carrier bag masquerading as a tent I look like a wild woman.

My hair is naturally curly and also ‘enhanced’ in the colour department (shhh don’ t tell anyone). Essentially, this means not a day goes by, unless I’m housebound, that I don’t wash, blow dry and straighten my hair. Ball ache.

I’ve resigned myself to the daily schlep of this routine but it really does grate when I head off on holiday. With this summer seeing me going on a monster trip to the US, taking in Miami, Disney, Vegas, Burning Man Festival and then back to Vegas, horror hair is not something I want to contend with in all those different climates. The desert festival is certainly going to be difficult and combined with the US lower voltage where I find myself willing my hairdryer to spurt out more air that a powerful fart, things aren’t looking promising.

To my absolute delight, salvation has come in the form of a Brazilian.

Fear not - I’m not going to shave it all off and leave a short Mohican down the middle, this is the 12 week blow dry AKA the Brazilian blow dry. One of beauty’s best kept secrets, if you ask me. Life changing in fact.

I trotted off to Trevor Sorbie where the lovely Macy was to administer the magic. Previously, I’d considered permanent straightening solutions but in the end decided against doing even more damage to my long suffering follicles. This presented the optimum solution for colour treated hair.

Resin is painted all over your hair and sealed in with heat. Each section of hair is straightened ten times. Luckily for me I’d dashed out on lunch and am currently sporting a crop. The Brazilian bit is because it originates from over there where the humidity causes untold havoc with those beauties’ barnets.

I was given a set of instructions: don’t tuck my hair behind my ears, don’t wash it for three days, if it was long that would also include not tying it back, when I do wash it make sure it is with the provided products – one slip up and the resin slips off. Check, check and check.

Macy talked of other customer experiences, where it has improved the long term condition of hair as over the 12 weeks much less abuse is required to style. One client in particular who had afro hair that failed to re-grow, as it was all broken off near the roots, found that after the end of her first treatment she had healthy re-growth and was amazed.

Glad that I had it on a Monday. By Wednesday I was sporting a positively chip pan look. Nice. However very straight. It was looking promising, I can’t remember a day when I’ve woken up without the need to do something to my hair.

Once I’d washed it, getting ready was rapid. Super quick drying and pin straight to boot. Didn’t even need to use my GHDs. Seriously impressive. This is honestly the best thing I’ve ever had done on my hair in terms of easy styling. Fully recommend it. I can now look forward to globetrotting gallivanting without a hair care in the world.
