Are you a wonder mum?

Everybody knows by now how to be healthier. ‘Treat’ foods in moderation, exercise more and plenty of fresh air. But what about looking after yourself mentally and emotionally?

As a super busy mum you may factor near the bottom of a list of priorities, if you’re lucky, but beware- we are all only human and can only run on empty for so long. For the sake of your sanity, happiness and that of your family you really do have a duty to look after yourself too. Here are some tips on how to put this into practice:

1. Talk to a good friend or your partner
It can be mindless chit chat but as long as you laugh and walk away with a smile it has boosted your wellbeing and confidence.

2. Take time out
Commit to an activity for you. A coffee every Wednesday with a friend, a yoga class every Thursday, or a monthly visit to the hairdressers. Everyone really can mange an hour without you. Leave your guilt at the front door too. You will return feeling happier and less stressed.

3. Pat yourself on the back
Mums tend to berate themselves for not getting the things done they wanted to. Start to make a conscious effort to mentally list the things you did achieve today and accept the fact you will never get everything done, prioritise.

4. Take action
If you’re feeling stressed or unhappy treat ‘happiness’ as a new project. Write down things that would help you to feel happier and present it to your family. Ask for their help in making it happen. I bet you do it for others all the time.

5. Don’t forget the basics
Get as much sleep as you can, even if that means missing Corrie or CSI, and don’t go hungry. Most mums forget to eat during the day; this depletes your energy and ruins your focus too.
