As we edge towards the end of the year most of us start to think about making changes. What do we want next year to be like for us?
The dreaded ‘New Years resolutions’ are really just ‘goals’ under another name, so let’s call them that and get in there early this year
Come January we can start with great intentions, but do you ever get side-tracked, lose motivation or become frustrated with your progress?
The dreaded ‘New Years resolutions’ are really just ‘goals’ under another name, so let’s call them that and get in there early this year with my six step guide....
1. Put pen to paper
Its imperative you write your goals down. Buy a new notebook, dedicate a special page in your diary or use a piece of A4 that will hang prominently in your home office. They need to be a visible reminder that you see regularly.
2 . Get specific
It’s not enough to say ‘I want to be happy’ or ‘I want to be rich.’ Break the goal down to ‘I want to have a night out with friends one a month’ or ‘I want to earn £500 more a month’
3. Put a date on it
It may be a month away, or 6 months away but think about what you’re asking of yourself, and be realistic.
4. One step at a time.
Ever heard the phrase ‘how do you eat an elephant? In bite size chunks.’ Break the goal down into manageable steps. Tick them off your list as you go. The sequence for getting fit may be: Enquire about local classes, commit to a particular class, buy gym clothes, organise babysitter for the Wednesday classes etc.
5. Share it
Once you have made the commitment to yourself tell others about your goal. Try and pick people who you think will be supportive and encouraging. Telling others shows how serious and committed you are. It will also boost your motivation to succeed when you know they will be enquiring on how you are getting on. Maybe they can help too?
6. Reward yourself
There may have been times when achieving your goal seemed tough, too much of an effort or too far away. Remember those times when you DO achieve it and congratulate yourself. Others may have given up in your situation. Now you’re on a roll, start planning you’re next one – this is a great habit to have.
