Reconnect With Nature: Flower Arranging
I like having a bunch of fresh flowers (or two) in my home all year round. Only problem is, supermarket-bought ones aren’t always the best option as many are grown using pesticides and chemicals. Throw in the fact a high proportion are grown and flown in from overseas and that bunch of oriental lilies begin to tug at the old environmental and ethical conscience. Good job we have lots of beautiful natives to choose from. To help me get a bit more creative on the flower arranging front, I enlisted the help of Sian at The Flower Lounge, Manchester, to show me the ropes and provide inspiration for readers. Clever lass that Sian – I’ll hand you over to her:

It's lovely seeing the seasons change. The first of the spring flowers are beginning to bloom and we're seeing some splashes of colour in the garden. Despite being mid-winter, there are many gorgeous, native early bloomers we can choose from when it comes to creating arrangements: tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, narcissi, muscari, and crocus to name a few.

To celebrate this time of year, I’ve put together a couple of ideas that are easy to recreate at home and also reflect the current season:

1. Muscari bulbs are especially beautiful and using them in a glass jar allows us to see the roots so we can watch how they develop. For this design I took some muscari bulbs that’d already been planted and simply re-potted them into a glass vase. For a natural look, you could tie raffia around the jar or even re-use an old jam jar for something equally graceful.

2. Swirled tulip design

- You’ll need approximately ten tulips, a goldfish bowl, some flower food, and water

    - Fill the vase with about two inches of water and add a little flower food

    - Insert the tulips into the vase at an angle with the bottom of the stem on the opposite side of the vase to the head of the flower. It should then rest on the inside of the vase when you release your hand.

        - Display your vase of tulips with pride.
