Assessment of Ovarian Reserve

The rising trend towards delaying parenthood is resulting in greater numbers of women trying to conceive later in life. This has increased the need to be able to accurately assess how well the ovaries are functioning, which is determined by the number of follicles remaining (ovarian reserve).

Both the quantity and quality of follicles are known to decline with increasing age but age alone cannot always be used as an indicator of ovarian reserve. Anti Mullerian hormone (AMH) is a substance produced naturally by the ovaries and measurement of AMH levels in the blood has been proposed as a reliable marker of ovarian reserve by Mr Luciano Nardo (Consultant in Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine and GyneHealth Director) and other researchers.

Low levels of AMH are suggestive of a reduced ovarian reserve. Ovarian function tests are useful in many areas of women’s health including subfertility, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and premature menopause.
