Where is it?
62 King Street
Manchester
M2 4ND
History:
Designer Catherine Kidston founded the company back in 1993 and opened a humble store in London's Holland Park. What initially began as a small business selling wall paper, vintage fabric and “brightly coloured junk furniture” quickly developed a cult following.
Kidston soon started developing her own prints and products, now known for their quirky floral prints. The product base has since expanded to include homeware and women’s fashion, slowly followed by children’s clothing in 2008. There are now 41 Cath Kidston stores and concessions in the UK, including two in Selfridges in both Manchester and The Trafford Centre.
What do they sell?
Cath Kidston's got it covered. The store is set in a maze-like manner with each floor dedicated to a specific room in a house. Entrance to the store covers everyday essentials including phone cases, key rings, compact mirrors, purses and umbrellas. Towards the back of the store lies a boudoir style changing room, complete with a small selection of women’s and children's clothing. The second level, although similar in style, covers all bathroom necessities. The third and biggest floor is an eclectic mix of everything else, with sewing kits sitting next to bed lining.
Who shops there?
Those wanting a change from the otherwise mundane high street. Cath Kidston seems to be the kind of store girls flock to in search of a present for their best friend’s birthday. It's pretty hard to go to a Cath Kidston store and return without purchasing something. From children’s clothing to household homeware, girls of all ages instantly fall in love with the shop and in return spend copious amounts of money. Not that tough considering a dress can cost upwards of £85.
Why shop there?
Cath Kidston has all the essentials of a department store, but on a smaller level and with less commercial appeal. The majority of the items on sale are designed with vintage inspired prints which some could find too fussy and formal. However, those wanting to mimic fifties-style housewives will love the store. The huge appeal seems to lie in the clever visual merchandising, with the design of the store set out like a life-sized dolls house.
Future:
With three Cath Kidston stores in Manchester, including two concessions, the North West looks set for a floral invasion.
Verdict:
It’s almost impossible not to like Cath Kidston, but that's exactly what the store does best. It creates a desire and need for something you wouldn't normally lust after. The new store on King Street has that Hansel and Gretel effect. Just follow the never-ending floral trail...
